ASTD Smoky Mountain Chapter's Fall Festival, Featuring Bob Pike - The
Trainer's Trainer
Bob Pike has well earned his reputation as "the trainer's trainer." He
is the founder and Chairman of the Bob Pike Group, serves on the Board
of Directors for both the National Speakers Association and the
International Alliance of Learning, and still personally delivers over
150 days of training and keynote addresses each year.
A trainer since 1969, he is the pioneer of Creative Training Techniques
Newsletter. The new edition of the Creative Training Techniques Handbook
(3rd Edition), is a best-seller with over 100,000 combined copies of all
editions in print. He has written or edited over 20 books (including 50
Creative Closers and One–on–One Training), seminars, and training
videos.
Bob has earned the rare Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) honor from
the National Speakers Association and has shared his message with over
100,000 people around the world. In August of 1999, Bob received his
CPAE (Council of Peers Award of Excellence) and was inducted into the
Speakers Hall of Fame. Only 142 people have been awarded the CPAE since
1977. Only 47 people hold both the CPAE and CSP designations.
Bob has been active in ASTD since 1972 and has served on their national
Board of Directors, three national conference design committees, and as
the Director of Special Interest Groups.
Bob is also often a featured speaker at ASTD Chapter meetings and
workshops.
Bob developed the Creative Training Techniques™ Seminar that now has
over 100,000 alumni since only 1980. His unique instructor-led,
participant-centered approach to training has become the mainstream,
thanks to his tireless advocacy of more effective alternatives to
lecture-based training.

8:30am - 11:00am Morning Session
"20 Best Ideas from Bob Pike"
Since 1969, Bob Pike has designed and delivered over 600
training programs. In this session, Bob will share 20 best ideas
from over 40 years for designing and delivering high impact
training and supporting learning.
The session will include:
• Getting to the C.O.R.E. of Training – Powerful Closers,
Openers, Revisit Techniques, and Energizers – Including three
tests for effective openers, three tests of an effective close,
and templates to customize your own powerful openers and
closers.
• High Impact Materials – The right types of handouts can be
combined to create workbooks that are used during class – and
continue to be resources afterwards. Bob’s handouts will model
the seven concepts of memory and how to apply them to learning,
the latest research on how individuals learn, and the three key
sections every handout should be divided into.
• Top Strategies – techniques for getting support for training
and how to sell training to management, ways to improve the
transfer of training, and how to apply the principle of divide
and conquer.
11:30 - 1:00 Lunch and Keynote Address
"Power of One: 7 Strategies for Creating Results in
the Workplace"
In this keynote, Bob will set the stage for moving from training
provider to trusted advisor. He will explore seven of the most
powerful strategies he has applied for over 40 years, both
inside and outside the classroom, to produce results for
organizations.
Learn the answers to the below questions:
• What can you do to really create leverage in your
organization?
• How do you really add value and make a difference?
1:30 - 4:00 Afternoon Session
"Creating a Motivational Environment for Learning"
Training is a process, not an event. But how do you make sure
people use what they learned? In this highly interactive
session, you will explore practical techniques and strategies
before, during, and after your training programs to help
participants feel good about themselves in the learning process
while getting results that make a difference on the job.
Learning objectives for this session include:
• How to keep them learning after you’ve stopped teaching
• Five ways motivation gets killed
• Eleven ways to motivate adults to apply and transfer what
they’ve learned
• Eight dynamic attention getters/energizers that will keep your
participants focused and learning
• Seven powerful transitions that increase audience buy in and
participation
• Seven powerful ways to revisit and reinforce content
